We had a bit of a back and forth conversation, and, without getting into the meat of the messages too deeply, or with whom I was communicating, I believe the real purpose in connecting with me was to have me remove [my post about Daniel Micay and Graphene OS](2024-07-12%20Graphene%20Strikes%20Again.md). The main reason seemed to be that it has, in fact, appeared in the Kiwifarms forums, inside a thread which is very disparaging toward Micay. I said that I wouldn't remove it without reason to believe that my post is causing genuine harm, and the conversation ended there. Throughout the existence of this blog, there has been a running theme: people need to be accountable for their own actions. In [my Alex Jones post](../Blog/2024-05-26%20Alex%20Jones%20Is%20a%20Crazy%20Kook%20and%20That's%20Why%20I%20Like%20Him.md), I gave innumerable examples of things we shouldn't ban, even though people take the ideas of those things and do others harm because of them. One example I used was the movie Taxi Driver, which inspired John Hinckley to stalk Jodie Foster and eventually shoot a president. We don't ban Taxi Driver or other movies like it that may inspire others to do horrible things. What John Hinckley did is a result of a character flaw in John Hinckley. Plenty of other people saw the movie and didn't shoot anyone. I don't want to get caught up in my usage of the word "ban" here. Obviously, my post wasn't in any danger of being banned. It was a request to self-censor. From his point of view, I think I really do understand the request. If Daniel really did get swatted 3 times (long before I ever made my post), as was his claim, it probably is reasonable to assume that it was done by people from Kiwifarms, and he was worried about them getting any further ammunition. The people in that forum have garnered a bit of a reputation. But honestly, what am I supposed to do? First, I'd have to set aside a few facts: 1. My post is archived on the Way Back Machine. If I remove it, it will still be linked there from Kiwifarms. 2. My entire post was basically a reaction to a couple of videos I linked to. Those videos have been up for months, years for one of them, and they have over a hundred-thousand views each (one actually has half a million). What is my post compared to that, especially considering I'm not even adding any new information? And besides, surely those reading the Daniel Micay thread on Kiwifarms has already seen them. 3. All I'm doing in my post is publicising my thought process in deciding whether or not to install GrapheneOS to my phone. That's it. It's difficult to imagine what harm that could possibly cause. So let's put these three points aside for a moment. Am I supposed to continually worry about who is reading any of my posts? Can I not be critical of anyone in any project for fear of what some asshole on a forum might do? I refuse to live like that. And let's say that someone with a Kiwifarms account *does* do something abhorrent after reading my post. Am *I* to blame for that? From my perspective, no, I am not. There's no one to blame but that one, *individual asshole*, who did the abhorrent thing. Just like there's no one involved with the making of the move Taxi Driver who's to blame for Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt. If you haven't read my [Alex Jones post](../Blog/2024-05-26%20Alex%20Jones%20Is%20a%20Crazy%20Kook%20and%20That's%20Why%20I%20Like%20Him.md), I would encourage you to do so. It really does get to my point here quite well. Something else I might say here is that I continually go back and forth as to whether or not I should just go with Graphene or not. Having such a convenient installer really goes a long way for me. I haven't bought the phone yet, and it may be a little while. There is a part of me that wonders if I'm making a big deal about nothing here. GrapheneOS is an open source project after all. If anything untoward is happening with it, surely there's enough eyes on the code that it would be quickly discovered. Whichever OS I decide upon, I'll be making another post about this, once I have the phone and have completed the install.
